Are You Considering a Mouthwash to Help Your Oral Health Improve?

If you are considering adding a mouthwash to your daily oral hygiene routine, you can give your brushing and flossing efforts a boost. While your mouthwash is strictly a supplement, and not a replacement for your toothbrush, toothpaste, and flossing method of choice, it can reach areas of the mouth that are not easily cleaned by your toothbrush. The two types of mouthwashes are: Therapeutic and Cosmetic.

Therapeutic mouthwashes boost your daily efforts to lower or control dental plaque, gingivitis, bad breath, and tooth decay, and can lessen pain from oral sores and offer relief from a condition called “dry mouth”. These mouthwashes are available over-the-counter and prescribed by your dentist. When you use a prescription mouthwash, you will be given directions as to the dosage, how long you keep it in the mouth, and the frequency of usage.

If you are using an over-the-counter mouthwash, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging. This means it has passed rigorous testing to ensure that it is both safe and effective and does what you need.

If you are using a cosmetic mouthwash, this can temporarily control bad breath and make it smell nice, but it won’t have the ingredients in it to actually kill oral bacteria that result in bad breath. In contrast, a therapeutic mouthwash works to help control or reduce bad breath, gingivitis, plaque, and tooth decay.

You can keep your smile healthy by paying attention to it every single day and maintain six-month dental cleanings. If you would like to schedule your next dental cleaning, our dentist, Dr. Kenneth Browning Prince, is happy to help.
